Star Wars Outlaws, alongside Star Wars Eclipse, is one of many Star Wars games that players have coming their way. However, they cannot help but ask whether Star Wars Outlaws will be set in an open-world environment. There is no shortage of Star Wars games on the market. However, no game has allowed players to explore faraway galaxies at their will.
Previously released Star Wars games such as Star Wars Battlefront II or Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order have either revolved around a PvP multiplayer experience or a fixed storyline. Neither of them has been an open-world game.
Ubisoft confirms Star Wars Outlaws will be an open-world game
Star Wars Outlaws will be the first open-world game for the franchise whose narrative plot will take place between the events of the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Considering that the game is made by Ubisoft, players expected the developers to follow trends that the studio has for most of their open-world games.
Games such as Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs all involve the player searching for huge towers. Climbing these towers opens up more areas of the map for you to explore. However, Ubisoft will be breaking this trend for Star Wars Outlaws. Julian Gerighty, the game's creative director, confirmed that "there are not any open towers you climb in the open world to unlock the map."
Rather than using binoculars or eagles like in previous Ubisoft games, players will simply unlock more areas of the map by visiting them and exploring them. Any fog covering up areas of the map will clear presumably just by visiting them. This news was received well by players, as it will feel highly out of character for Kay Vess, the Star Wars Outlaws protagonist, to constantly scale up towers and scope out her surroundings.
Gerighty also mentioned that he instructed the dev team in accordance with what an open world means to players: full freedom of exploration. It was also mentioned that the Star Wars Outlaws' open world won't be as vast as Assassin's Creed. It will not be filled with tons of collectables, making players go through hundreds of hours of gameplay to achieve 100% completion.
While the recently released trailer for the game does not give players any information about the open world, it is worth mentioning that it is simply a story trailer. Players can expect more information after the release of a gameplay trailer. Star Wars Outlaws will be launched on 30th August 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows.
