Ways to Fix Battery Drain in Android 13

Battery life decreasing quickly is one of the most common issues users report after updating to the latest version of Android. Android 13 is no exception. The new software update contains many new features and changes that, while great additions overall, can inadvertently cause faster battery drain until properly optimized. Don't panic if it seems your phone's battery is depleting faster than usual after updating to Android 13. There are several tweaks and techniques you can use to identify and fix battery drain problems:

7 Ways to Fix Battery Drain in Android 13

1. Check Battery Usage in Settings

Android 13 introduces an improved Privacy Dashboard in the Settings app that gives you greater visibility into how apps are using your data and resources in the background.

Specifically, check the new "Battery usage" section, which shows battery usage details for each app over the past 24 hours and longer time periods. Check if any apps used an abnormally high percentage of battery.

To Check App Usage in Battery usage, Open Settings and go to Battery and Device care > Battery then Tap "Usage since last full charge" to see app consumption over 24 hours or 7 days. Here limit usage or uninstall apps showing high background usage.

2. Turn Off Location Services

Location services are one of the biggest battery drains, especially if every installed app is allowed to access your location continuously.

Go through Settings > Location > App permissions and turn off location access completely for apps that don't need it. For example, your Calculator app most likely doesn't need location access. Disable unnecessary location access like this for other apps.

For apps like Maps or Uber that do require location, enable the "Only while using the app" option. This allows location access only while the app is open.

3. Disable Unused Sensors and Connectivity

Things like Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi scanning, and motion sensors can drain the battery if left on when not needed. For this Go to Settings > Connections & Turn off Bluetooth, NFC, and Wi-Fi scanning if you're not actively using them.

Also, disable motion sensors, raise to wake, tap to wake, OK Google detection, and other battery-draining features if you notice faster drain after updating to Android 13. Stop these features from passively running in the background.

4. Use Dark Mode and Lower Screen Brightness

Android's Dark theme doesn't just look cool - it also saves battery life, especially on phones with OLED displays. The dark mode uses fewer pixels and extends the battery. Go to Settings > Display > Dark mode to enable it.

Similarly, keep your screen brightness in check. High brightness levels drain the battery quickly. Use Android's Adaptive-brightness feature or lower brightness manually.

5. Disable Unnecessary Sounds and Vibrations

It's easy to overlook sounds and haptics as insignificant battery drains, but they add up. Things like keyboard clicks, screen locking sounds, keyboard vibrations, and notification vibrations drain the battery over time.

Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > System sound, & Turn off Dialing keypad tones, Touch sounds, Screen lock sounds, vibration, and anything else unnecessary.

6. Manage Background App Refresh

Background app refresh allows unused apps to still drain resources. Android 13 adds more controls for this feature.

Go to Settings > Apps > (Choose app) > Battery and set apps you don't use often to "Restricted" background activity instead of "Unrestricted." This prevents background refreshing.

7. Factory Reset Device

If you still notice a faster battery drain after trying the above steps, consider resetting your device to factory default settings. This gives you a clean slate, removing any bugs or issues introduced during the Android 13 update.

Resetting will wipe your device, so be sure to back up data first. Then go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset and scroll down to the bottom & tap on the Reset button. This should resolve any lingering battery drain problems.

Conclusion

Optimizing battery life on new Android releases requires some tweaking, but using app usage tools, limiting background activity, disabling unnecessary features, and resetting your device should help maximize battery life on Android 13. Monitor your battery usage closely and try these tips to keep your smartphone running longer.
