Redmi Buds 5 Review

Xiaomi's Redmi brand has launched its latest true wireless earbuds, the Redmi Buds 5, in India. Priced aggressively at Rs 2,999, these earbuds bring several upgrades over the previous Redmi Buds 4 making them an exciting option in the budget TWS segment. Let's take a detailed look at what the Redmi Buds 5 have to offer.

1. Design and Comfort

The Redmi Buds 5 feature an all-new design that looks premium with its compact size and matte finish. The charging case is one of the smallest in this segment and can easily fit in your palm. It has a soft close lid and a textured finish that resists fingerprints.

The earbuds have an in-ear design with silicone tips that provide a secure and comfortable fit. I found them perfect for long duration use without any ear fatigue. The glossy inner portion of the case does attract smudges but it's not a major issue. Overall, the refreshing design and ergonomics make the Redmi Buds 5 stand out.

2. Sound Quality

Audio performance is one area where the Redmi Buds 5 shine bright. The 12.4mm dynamic drivers deliver clear and detailed sound with thumping bass and crisp highs. The volume levels get extremely loud yet I did not notice any distortion even at 90% volume.

You can tweak the sound through EQ presets in the app. The enhanced bass mode pumps up the low-end nicely making these ideal for bass lovers. Vocals also sound full and pristine in the enhanced voice mode.

3. Active Noise Cancellation

ANC is something you don't expect in budget TWS earbuds but the Redmi Buds 5 surprisingly offers decent noise cancellation. It can block out low frequency ambient sounds like traffic, AC hum etc effectively up to 80-90%.

The transparency mode lets you hear surroundings when required. Both modes worked reliably during my testing. Three noise cancellation levels and transparency modes are available to choose from.

4. Call Quality & Connectivity

Call quality is another highlight of the Redmi Buds 5. The quad-mic system results in clear voice pickup without background noise. The caller on the other end could hear me nicely even when I was walking on the street.

These earbuds feature Bluetooth 5.3 for efficient connectivity. I did not experience any major dropouts and the range was also good. Fast pairing works seamlessly with Android devices. The earbuds can also connect to two devices simultaneously.

5. Battery Life

Redmi claims 10 hours of playback time for the buds and a total of 38 hours with the case. This seems accurate based on my experience. I easily got 9-9.5 hours of use at 60% volume with ANC off. The case can charge the buds fully 3 times over. It also supports fast charging - 10 mins of charging provides 100 mins of playback.

6. Other Features

The Redmi Buds 5 come equipped with plenty of handy features. You get customizable tap controls, auto play/pause via in-ear detection and dual device connectivity. The XiaoMi Earbuds app lets you control noise modes, see battery levels, customize gestures and more.

Gaming mode is missing but latency wasn't too noticeable. The buds are also IP54 rated sweat and splash resistant. Available in three cool color options - black, white and purple.

Verdict

Priced at just Rs 2,999, the Redmi Buds 5 deliver excellent features and sound quality that competing brands cannot match. Noise cancellation, app support, great battery life and crisp audio make these affordable wireless earbuds easy to recommend. They clearly raise the bar for budget TWS earbuds in India.
